Will Technology Really Change Education? From Blackboard to Web by Todd W
Kent and Robert F. McNergney. Corwin Press, 245 Teller Road, Thousand Oaks, CA
91320-2218. 1999 (http:// www.corwinpress.com). 66 pp. ISBN: 0-8039-6656-3.
Softcover, $12.95.
This title comes from the Critical Issues in Teacher Education series,
published in conjunction with the American Association of Colleges for Teacher
Education. It explores technology's impact on K-12 education, its past, and its
future. This small volume's goal is to help teachers with all the issues
surrounding the use of technology in the classroom. The five chapters cover
topics such as technology and teacher education, historical use of education
technologies, models for teaching with technology, and the future of educational
technology.
The material draws a great deal upon published reports such as Education
Week's "Technology Counts," the 1995 Office of Technology Assessment (OTA)
Report, a 1997 report from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher
Education, and others. There are long quotes and sections taken from the
reports.
For teachers who want an overview of technology in education with pros and
cons addressed, as well as suggestions for future use, this book will provide a
framework on the issues every educator faces. Contains references and an index.
